ITEMS IN TIME CAPSULE
1.
Cossack memorabilia: The Cossack has been SSU's athletic mascot
since the University began in 1961, but in spring 2002 a group initiated
by the Associated Students voted to change the mascot to the Seawolves.
This was subsequently approved by University president Ruben Arminana.
2.
Entertainment Weekly 4/5/02: features the 74th Academy Awards when
Halle Berry became the first African American woman to win the Oscar
for best actress.
3.
Condom: This is one of the many methods of birth control available
in 2002. Condoms also reduce the risk of spreading sexually transmitted
disease and AIDS, a world-wide epidemic with no cure at this time.

Zip Disk: this is a computer disk used to store 100 times more information
than a floppy disk.
5.
40th Anniversary items: in celebration of our 40th anniversary we
have created various memorabilia.
6.
2 mice/mouses (one everyone calls the "hockey puck" mouse
and a plain Applie/Macintosh mouse): these are used to navigate
on a computer.
7.
CSU Union mug: many of the faculty of the California State University
system belong to a union called the California Faculty Association.
8.
Beanie Baby: these were a popular item at this time period. People
amassed huge collections of different Beanie Babies.
9.
Duck Feather: this is to represent our campus lakes and the wildlife
in them. It's from one of the ducks that lived near the campus lakes
(commonly called the Duck Ponds).
10.
Tennis Ball & Baseball: these two items represent some of the
sports we have on campus which are: Men's Soccer, Men's Basketball,
Baseball, Women's Soccer, Women's Basketball, Softball, Volleyball,
Men's Tennis, Women's Cross Country, Women's Tennis and Women's
Track & Field.

"I Survived Pile Driving at SSU" T -shirt. While building
the Jean and Charles Schulz Information Center, which opened in
Fall 2000, the campus community was constantly bombarded with the
noise of driving 600 pilons into the group to support the building.
The University threw a party for the residential students, who were
most disturbed from their sleep, and gave away these t-shirts. See
the "signing of the last pile"
photo in the scrapbook. More than 100 students, faculty and staff
signed the final pile before it was driven into the ground.

Charlie Brown picture: the creator of the comic strip "Peanuts,"
Charles Schulz and his wife Jean Schulz (an SSU alum) generously
donated funds ($5 million) to help SSU grow.

Cell phone: this is a portable phone. Cell phones were owned by
almost everyone at almost every age.

JUMP flashlight: JUMP (Join Us in Making Progress is one of the
over 101 clubs on campus

GMC pen: The University had these pens made as souvenirs for the
groundbreaking ceremony of the Green Music Center

New IMAC brochure: new computer information book

Newsweek 9111101 and New Yorker magazine 9124101: recap of devastating
September 11 bombing of the Twin Towers in New York.

Backstreet Boys CD: a popular band especially with young girls.
The Bakstreet Boys, and their counterpart In Sync, were the first
of the "boy" bands.

PowerBook laptop: a portable computer. Cost in 2001/2001, about
$1800. 24. Diet Pepsi can.

SSU flag. This design was unveiled in 2002 for the first time.
26.
Technology High School grand opening video. The Tech High belongs
to the Cotati Rohnert Park School District, but is on the SSU campus.
27.
40th anniversary history brochure.
28.
CSU application on floppy disk (not commonly used. Most students
apply on-line through a system called CSU Mentor)
29.
Project Censored radio show CD: Project Censored is a nationally
recognized organization that highlights the top 25 most under-covered
important news stories.

BlueBook, Scantron: materials used for test taking. Old, even to
us, but still useful.

Congressional recognition from Congresswoman Lynn Woolsey.

Christo brochure: a world-known artist know for his outdoor exhibits.
